English for Specific Purposes.
Our English for specific purposes (ESP) courses are designed with the professional worker in mind. The courses are the ideal choice for anyone who needs to improve their English for the workplace. The courses are tailor made to suit the specific learning needs of the group and to include topics of relevance to their particular profession. We welcome applications from all kinds of clients including those in the engineering, education, tourism, commercial, marketing and medical sectors.
All our English for specific purposes courses include a pre-course needs analysis to identify specific learner needs.
· Minimum Class Size: 5 people.
English for Specific Purposes Option 1 - ESP + General English Combination Course.
6 x 60 minute ESP lessons + 20 x 45 minute General English lessons per week.
This combination course covers all areas of general English concentrating on improving students’ skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The general English lessons allow students to revise and develop the language they may already know. The ESP element prepares students for a variety of everyday work functions.
English for Specific Purposes Option 2 – Intensive ESP Course.
20 x 60 minute ESP lessons per week.
An intensive and informative course that focuses entirely on developing English language skills for work. The course would benefit professionals at all levels. The course gives students the opportunity to prepare and practise for authentic work situations in a supportive and welcoming learning environment.
English for Specific Purposes Option 3 – ESP + Professional visits.
20 x 45 minute ESP lessons per week + visits to UK and Irish companies of specific interest to the student.
This course allows students to develop their English language skills for work whilst gaining a valuable insight into their work sector in the UK and Ireland. The language element prepares students for a variety of work situations and provides plenty of realistic practice. Professional visits give students the opportunity to visit local companies and learn first hand about their sector. Visits can be arranged in many sectors, e.g. human resources, IT, engineering, tourism, marketing, education, etc.
English for Specific Purposes Option 4 – ESP + Leisure Programme.
20 x 45 minute ESP lessons per week + Leisure activities.
This course is the perfect mix of business and pleasure. The language element prepares students for a variety of work situations and provides plenty of realistic practice. Students can also spend some time enjoying a varied and interesting social and leisure programme.
Course Aims.
- Improve language skills in the four key areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
- Expand professional vocabulary.
- Practise and prepare for using English in a variety of situations.
- Build student confidence for using English in the workplace.
Course Content.
The English for specific purposes courses include a variety of activities to encourage students to progress as much as possible.
- Writing: improving written communication skills.
- Reading: developing reading skills and expanding vocabulary.
- Listening: understanding spoken English in a variety of contexts.
- Speaking: class discussions, role-plays, typical professional situations.
- Pronunciation: students will be encouraged to improve their pronunciation throughout the course.
- Business: preparing for many types of professional tasks.
- Idioms: learn to use common professional expressions and idioms in the correct context.
